Why did my neck pain develop?
There are a number of reasons why neck pain may occur. When someone experiences neck pain, it typically runs from the base of their skull to the top of their shoulder blades, finally settling in the back of the neck. The pain can vary in severity, from a constant dull ache to sharp and stabbing pains.
Neck pain can sometimes include additional symptoms, including but not limited to:
- Inability to fully stand up or sit up straight
- Arm weakness
- Loss of sleep due to pain and discomfort
- Discomfort and pain when remaining in the same position for too long
- Numbness or tingling in the upper extremities
- Stiffness and muscle tightness in the upper body
- Headaches
Common Causes of Neck Pain
Poor Posture & "Tech Neck"
01Prolonged computer use, phone scrolling, and poor desk ergonomics place extra pressure on the cervical spine, causing stiffness and discomfort.
Muscle Strains & Tension
02Stress, repetitive movements, and awkward sleeping positions lead to muscle tightness and tension in the neck and shoulders.
Herniated or Bulging Discs
03Cervical disc injuries place pressure on nearby nerves, causing neck pain, pain radiating into the shoulder or arm, tingling, and weakness.
Whiplash Injuries
04Motor vehicle accidents and sudden impacts strain the muscles and ligaments of the neck, causing pain, stiffness, headaches, and reduced mobility.
Arthritis & Degenerative Changes
05Age-related wear and tear in the cervical spine may lead to chronic neck pain, bone spurs, and stiffness that worsens over time without treatment.
Sports & Workplace Injuries
06Contact sports, repetitive overhead work, and lifting injuries can cause acute cervical strain, sprain, or nerve compression requiring physiotherapy rehabilitation.
Common Causes of Back Pain
Lower Back Pain & Muscle Strain
01Poor posture, prolonged sitting, and repetitive movements strain the muscles and ligaments of the lower back. Common among office workers, drivers, and manual labourers.
Sciatica & Radiating Leg Pain
02Compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve causes sharp, shooting pain that radiates from the lower back through the hip and down the leg, often with numbness or tingling.
Herniated & Bulging Discs
03Discs between the vertebrae can bulge or rupture, putting pressure on nearby nerves and causing localized back pain along with weakness or tingling in the legs.
Post-Accident & Whiplash-Related Back Pain
04Motor vehicle accidents and falls can injure the muscles, ligaments, and joints of the spine, leading to stiffness, pain, and reduced mobility that requires structured rehabilitation.
Degenerative Disc Disease & Arthritis
05Age-related wear on the spine's discs and joints causes chronic stiffness, reduced mobility, and recurring pain that flares with activity or prolonged positions.
Sports & Workplace Lifting Injuries
06Improper lifting technique, heavy loads, and sudden twisting movements put athletes and workers at high risk of acute and cumulative back injuries.
Common Causes of Knee Pain
Ligament Injuries (ACL/MCL)
01The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and medial collateral ligament (MCL) are commonly injured during sports involving sudden pivoting, cutting, or direct impact, causing instability and swelling.
Meniscus Tears
02The meniscus acts as a shock absorber in the knee. Tears can occur from sudden twisting during sports or gradually from age-related degeneration, causing pain, swelling, and locking sensations.
Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome
03Often called "runner's knee," this condition causes pain around the kneecap from overuse, muscle imbalance, or poor biomechanics, particularly during running, stairs, and squatting.
Knee Osteoarthritis
04Age-related wear and tear of knee cartilage causes chronic stiffness, pain, grinding sensations, and swelling that can significantly limit mobility and daily function.
IT Band Syndrome
05The iliotibial band becomes tight and inflamed from repetitive running or cycling, causing sharp lateral knee pain that worsens with activity and can prevent training.
Sports & Overuse Injuries
06High-impact sports, jumping, running, and repetitive strain place significant stress on the knee joint, contributing to tendon, ligament, and cartilage injuries over time.
Common Causes of Shoulder Pain
Rotator Cuff Injuries
01The rotator cuff stabilizes the shoulder joint. Repetitive overhead movements, lifting, and sports can lead to tendon irritation or tearing, causing pain when lifting the arm, night pain, and weakness.
Shoulder Impingement
02Tendons become compressed during arm movement, common in athletes, weightlifters, and office workers with poor posture. Causes pain during lifting and reduced range of motion.
Frozen Shoulder (Adhesive Capsulitis)
03Causes gradual stiffness and pain, severely limiting shoulder movement. Makes daily activities like dressing and sleeping on the affected side extremely difficult.
Arthritis & Joint Degeneration
04Shoulder arthritis occurs when cartilage wears down over time, causing joint pain, stiffness, grinding sensations, and reduced mobility that can worsen without treatment.
Poor Posture & Muscle Imbalances
05Prolonged desk work and phone use place stress on the shoulder and upper back muscles, contributing to pain, dysfunction, and reduced strength over time.
Sports & Workplace Injuries
06Repetitive lifting, throwing, pushing, and overhead movements strain the shoulder joint and surrounding tissues, leading to acute injury or chronic overuse pain.
