Vibriosis represents an infection that ranges from mild to potentially severe, with experts warning of increased threat this summer as vibrio bacteria appear in atypical locations.

The infection stems from approximately a dozen vibrio bacteria species. Notably, Vibrio vulnificus, typically found along the Southeastern U.S. coast, has extended its range northward to Delaware Bay's cooler waters.

How Infection Occurs

According to medical experts, "the key here is you have an opening in your skin that allows the bacteria to get into it." Bacteria penetrate through cuts, scrapes, burns, insect bites, or puncture wounds.

Prevention Strategies

Maintaining proper hygiene significantly reduces skin infection risk. For wounds, washing with soap and water and monitoring healing are essential. People with open cuts should avoid warm saltwater environments where bacteria flourish. Additionally, consuming raw or undercooked seafood — particularly oysters — should be avoided to prevent diarrheal illness.
